ThunderClan, RiverClan, WindClan, and ShadowClan have been dealing with an unusual threat since practically the time they were created.
It all started about two years after SkyClan was driven out.
One cat stayed behind, refusing to leave her Clan's ancient territory. She migrated from the newly-built twolegplace to an area beyond the Clans. No one was aware of her.
She brought loners, rogues, and kittypets together, telling them of the Dark Forest and how they could destroy the Clans alongside the Dark Forest. She taught them to believe that the Dark Forest was the one thing they should all strive to live for, because if they didn't, their afterlives would be nothing but misery. She twisted them into her servants to begin a war that would last for generations.
The Clans were completely ignorant of these Dark Forest cultists.
Suddenly, their kits were disappearing, one from each Clan every moon.
After years of these disappearances, one kit came back, a fully-grown cat, and said he'd been kept prisoner by a large group of cats, as he disagreed with their beliefs and traditions. He told the Clans the location of this group, and the Clans sought the group out, prepared to fight for their lost kin.
They failed. The Dark Forest cultist group (now known as the Dark Hearts) nearly destroyed the Clans, and as payment for the Clans' attack, they commanded that every Clan sacrifice a single kitten from every litter on the first day of every moon. The most recent queens of each Clan are to go to a designated location of their Clan's territory. A representative from the Dark Hearts comes and retrieves the kitten that will be the most beneficial to the Dark Hearts. Any Clan that refuses to give up a kitten from a litter will be eliminated.
There are spies within the Clans from the Dark Hearts. Some know more than others, but even these spies know not the location of the Dark Hearts. They are only to report any important information about the Dark Hearts that they hear.
After many moons of living in fear of the Dark Hearts, the Clans want to make a move, but where do they start? How big are the Dark Hearts now? Who among their Clanmates is a spy?
There is no longer trust within the Clans.
There is only fear.
